Job 28:12-13, 23-24 “But where can wisdom be found? Where does understanding dwell? 13 Man does not comprehend its worth; it cannot be found in the land of the living. 23 God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells, 24 for he views the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens.
Job asks a good question: "Where can wisdom be found?" He goes through a list of places we can't find it. Human beings don't understand how much it's worth. We can't find it in the depths of the ocean. We can't buy it with precious stones and jewels.
There is only one who knows and possesses true wisdom. God does. He shows his wisdom in the creation that surrounds us--the way everything fits together and works perfectly. He demonstrates his wisdom as he controls the wind and the waves. He knows, far better than any human being, what's best for us.
That was Job's consolation as he listened to bad advice from his friends. He trusted the LORD's wisdom. He trusted the LORD's plan. He knew that even though he had lost everything that was near and dear to his heart, including his own health, he could trust the LORD to take care of him. Job concluded this section by saying, "‘The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding’ ” (Job 28:28). Sounds a lot like what Solomon said centuries later: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding" (Proverbs 9:10). The LORD gives true wisdom. Job trusted it. We can trust it too. Lord, make us wise so that we might better understand your wisdom!
To God alone the glory!
